In the centre of the old castrated village, the three merchant streets that once flourished form the old quarter. This district, called Sanmachi-dōri, is also distinguished by its own traditional architecture and by the very old shops that still remain. It is the main tourist attraction of Takayama.
Among these shops, you will find Japanese confectionery sellers, shops selling traditional handicrafts, as well as brands offering local specialities, such as mitarashi-dango (skewers of rice balls with soy sauce) or beef skewers from Hida. You can also buy the famous "Sarubobo" amulet and you can taste sake in local breweries (especially recommended during the winter)!
