Shirakawa Village

There is an image of rural Japan made of old cottage and rice houses. This image is found in the villages of Shirakawago, classified as a UNESCO heritage site.

You will search in vain for Shirakawago on a map: it is the name of an area in the valley of the Shogawa River, Gifu Prefecture. Shirakawago and the neighbouring region of Gokayama have several listed villages that have become symbols of Japanese rural heritage: Ogimachi, Suganuma and Ainokura.
